Stevens Miller, candidate for delegate in Herndon and Sterling, today denounced the political “blueprint” put forth by his opponent’s party leader and insisted that Tom Rust explain his support of Bob McDonnell’s agenda. McDonnell’s thesis, published this week by the Washington Post, objects to the rise of women in the workplace, calls for government discrimination against “nontraditional” families and questions whether contraception should be available to unmarried couples. Rust’s record clearly shows that he has supported these initiatives. “The women of Northern Virginia deserve to know that their rights to advance in the workplace earn equal pay for equal work and have access to contraception will be in imminent danger under a McDonnell-Rust platform,” said Shaun Daniels, Miller for Delegate campaign manager. “There’s no doubt that McDonnell’s blueprint for an anti-women’s rights Virginia is too extreme for the residents of Herndon and Sterling. Stevens Miller condemns this agenda and he also condemns McDonnell’s and Rust’s attempts to hide their record and present themselves as moderates.” Like Bob McDonnell, Tom Rust has presented himself as a moderate centrist, when in fact he has worked time and again to advance McDonnell’s blueprint to take Virginia backwards. Tom Rust’s Real Record: • Rust voted to allow physicians and other health care professionals to refuse to dispense emergency contraception. [HB563, 2/12/02] • Rust has repeatedly opposed embryonic stem cell research. [HB1600; Amendment by Delegate Vanderhye to Item 4-0.01 #1h, 2/12/09; HB1600, Item 4-0.01 #1h, 2/12/09; HB30, Item 4-0.01 #1h, 2/21/08; HB1650, Item 4-0.01 #1h, 2/8/07; HB5002, Item 4-0.01 #1h, 4/11/06] • Rust has repeatedly voted to subject abortion clinics to strict structural requirements that would severely limit women’s access to health services. [HB1600, Item 301 #2h, 2/12/09; HB894,1/22/08; HB1883, 1/23/07; HB189, 2/9/06; HB2784, 2/1/05; HB116, 1/28/04; HB1290, 2/11/04; HB2367, 1/23/03, 1/24/03] • Rust opposed an amendment from Gov. Mark Warner expressing support for Roe v. Wade [Gov’s recommendation to HB1, 4/21/04] • Rust supported legislation to restrict Gay/Straight Alliances in high schools [HB1308, 1/31/06] • Rust has voted to cut millions for the FAMIS Moms program, which provides medical coverage to low-income pregnant women who meet financial eligibility requirements. [HB30, Item 305 #1h, 2/21/08; HB1650, Item 301 #1h, 2/8/07] “Tom Rust has been a key ally of McDonnell’s during their time working side-by-side in Richmond,” Daniels said. “The issues that Rust and McDonnell would concentrate on in the coming years won’t work towards any new jobs or roads. If Rust and McDonnell had their way, McDonnell’s cringe-worthy manifesto could become reality and the entire commonwealth would take two giant leaps backwards.” |
